Relevance. A low level of physical fitness among personnel entering the defense forces negatively affects both the process of military training and the effectiveness of performing service and combat tasks. Given the increasing physical demands during training and in combat conditions, research aimed at identifying an optimal balance between the level of physical fitness of security and defense personnel and the requirements of professional duties is of particular relevance. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comprehensive analysis of physical fitness tests and test batteries used to assess the physical fitness of representatives of security and defense forces in different countries, as well as to substantiate the feasibility of applying selected tests for the assessment of general and special physical fitness of servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Methods. A bibliographic search was conducted in four electronic databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, PubMed) and two search platforms (OVID and EBSCOhost). Search terms were grouped into four categories: assessment, instrument, physical fitness, and organization. Titles and abstracts were screened to determine eligibility according to the inclusion criteria. The electronic search strategy yielded 5,492 records, of which 193 studies met the inclusion criteria and were selected for further analysis. Results. Cardiorespiratory (aerobic) fitness was assessed in 156 studies (80.83%), musculoskeletal fitness (strength and muscular endurance) in 133 studies (68.91%), agility in 16 studies (8.29%), and body composition in 124 studies (64.25%). The most frequently used tests included the 2-mile run, sit-up test, push-up test, as well as body mass index, percentage of body fat assessed using skinfold measurements, body mass, and fat-free mass. Conclusions. While new scientific evidence continues to accumulate in the field of physical training within security and defense forces, the aforementioned tests can be considered appropriate and effective tools for assessing the level of physical fitness of their personnel.
