Chronology of the Cossack Martial Arts Revival in 1990–1998s of the 20th Century in Ukraine Through the Prism of the Cossack Martial art “Spas”

Topicality. In society and in research environment an interest to the issue of national martial arts is growing as well as the problem of objective historical highlighting of the Ukrainian national martial arts revival. The Purpose of the Research is to determine the historical chronology of the Cossack martial arts revival, the martial art “Spas” through the modern development in Ukraine and abroad, using the All-Ukrainian and International events on Khortytsia and other iconic places of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Research Methods. Historical and pedagogical analysis of archival documents, reports of sports Cossack organizations such as a Non-governmental organization Children Youth Academy of Cossack Martial Art “Spas”, Zaporizhzhya City School of Martial Arts “Spas”, Department of Youth, Sports and Tourism of Zaporizhzhya City Council; surveys of coaches and leadership of sports associations, the Internet resources. Research Results. It was determined that the martial art of “Spas” is the basis of the Zaporizhzhya cossacks` martial training. The historical chronology of the Cossack`s martial arts revival, the martial art “Spas” through the modern development in Ukraine and abroad on the example of All-Ukrainian and International events hosting on Khortytsia island has been highlighted. It is noted that Zaporizhzhya Cossacks received systematic martial trainings during the reign of Hetman Petro Konashevych- Sahaidachnyi. Conclusions. Ukrainian national martial arts are part of the martial culture of the Ukrainian people. The Ukrainian national martial arts development is the historical event of Ukrainian national sports revival. Ukraine has a thousand-year tradition of military training of soldiers who defend their homeland. Martial art “Spas” is a traditional martial school of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks, which was revived from Khortytsia, the cradle of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks.
