Abstract

The article describes the mechanisms of self-organization of contemporary sport as a social institution. The role of the educational system is the mechanism that results in a continuous increase in the overall level of sports performance. The basic functions of contemporary sport, trends and prospects of its development are investigated. It has been established that the basis for the development of contemporary sports is the activity of people to meet the needs of both individual self-expression that is achieved in the course of competitive activity, organized on the basis of their physicality, and social needs in a variety of spectacles. It is determined that the competitive activity of people is the nucleus, around which the whole range of complex socio-economic relations is formed and developed, that generate the social phenomenon of sports and determine its importance as a public spectacle. Competitive activity of people plays the role of the educational system mechanism that in the process of sport development leads to the continuous increase in the overall level of sports results. It is revealed that the sport can be almost any kind of human activity, if it works according to the laws of sports perfection. This means that theoretically possible variety of sports is as inexhaustible as the inexhaustible manifestations of human abilities are. It is found out that the continuous growth of athletic performance necessitates the constant search for new approaches to the construction of the training process, change and revision of existing methods of training athletes. The objective result of this process is the formation of the society with a whole range of socially determined needs. These requirements create conditions for intensive development of the science of sport, covering the history of its origin and driving forces that determine the historical development of sport, its place and role in the society; sports and mass movements arising on its basis; ideals, norms and principles of training, competitive activities and the like.
